Tilwanda Denise Cheatham was an eight-year-old girl who vanished in the summer of 1989 from the Balltown community of Aiken, South Carolina. Her disappearance remains unsolved more than three decades later.
Physical Description
Tilwanda was described as a Black female with black hair and brown eyes. At the time she disappeared, she wore her hair either in braids or pulled back into a ponytail. She had a distinctive dark skin discoloration or patch on either her left arm or left leg, which could have helped identify her.
When she was last seen, she may have been wearing one of two outfits reported by witnesses:
• A white shirt, red flower-print shorts, and white sneakers
or
• A red T-shirt with the word “Tom” printed on the back in white letters with white shorts or pants and sneakers.
Her name has appeared in records with several different spellings, including Tiwana, Tiwanda, Tawana, and Tilwanda, which may have complicated early searches for her.
The Day She Disappeared
On August 11, 1989, Tilwanda was spending time with relatives in the Balltown area of Aiken. Her family lived on Jack Jones Street near Highway 19, a small residential area of the city.
At some point that day, Tilwanda became upset after her mother told her she needed to return home instead of staying with relatives. According to reports, the young girl ran into her mother’s house and took spare change from a jar in the kitchen before leaving the residence.
Witnesses later reported seeing Tilwanda walking toward a nearby convenience store.
At approximately 5:30 p.m., two neighbors saw her at a Quik Stop convenience store located a few blocks from her home. This would be the last confirmed sighting of the eight-year-old girl.
Some reports state that she may have been heading there to buy ice cream or snacks with the spare change she had taken. Other accounts mention she may have borrowed a coin and used a nearby phone booth before disappearing.
After that sighting, Tilwanda vanished without a trace.
Early Investigation
Law enforcement quickly began searching the area. Search efforts included ground searches and aerial surveillance in the surrounding community. Despite these efforts, investigators were unable to find any physical evidence pointing to what happened to the child.
Authorities explored several possibilities, including:
• The possibility that Tilwanda had run away and was staying with relatives
• The possibility that she had been abducted by someone in the area
• Reports that she may have been seen in another state, which prompted involvement from the FBI in the investigation.
Despite following these leads, none produced confirmed sightings or evidence of her whereabouts.
Arrest of Her Grandmother
Two weeks after Tilwanda disappeared, a surprising development occurred in the investigation.
Her grandmother was arrested and charged with obstructing justice in connection with the case. Police stated that the grandmother was not considered a suspect in Tilwanda’s disappearance, but she had repeatedly lied to investigators during questioning.
Authorities believed the false statements may have interfered with the investigation, though the exact details of what she told police were never widely released.
Theories and Questions
Investigators have long considered the possibility that Tilwanda might have run away or gone to stay with relatives, but those theories have never been supported by evidence and were eventually dismissed.
Despite reports that she had run away from home before, investigators say it remains unclear what actually happened after she left the house that day.
Another lead involved a truck driver who passed through the area the day she disappeared and reportedly had a history of crimes against children, though he was never charged in connection with the case.
With no confirmed sightings after the convenience store, investigators believe foul play cannot be ruled out.
Who Tilwanda Was
Tilwanda was not just a missing child — she was remembered by those who knew her as a bright student.
She was an honor roll student at North Aiken Elementary School at the time of her disappearance.
Friends and family described her as a typical eight-year-old girl whose life abruptly ended in mystery.
The Case Today
Tilwanda Denise Cheatham has never been found.
Her case remains classified as Endangered Missing, and investigators continue to hope that new information could eventually solve the decades-old mystery.
DNA from her family has been entered into national databases so that it can be compared with unidentified remains or with anyone who might come forward claiming to be Tilwanda.
If she is still alive today, she would be in her mid-40s.
