The Day They Vanished
On the afternoon of January 10, 1985, Michael and Pamela left Betsy Ross Elementary School in northeast Houston around 2:30 p.m.
The school was located in the 2800 block of Bay Street near the Eastex Freeway. The siblings lived nearby with their maternal grandmother in the 3500 block of Des Chaumes Street, who was their primary caregiver.
Both children were enrolled in kindergarten at the time. Pamela was attending school for the first time, while Michael was repeating kindergarten because school officials believed he had been too young when he first started.
The walk home from school was familiar to them.
However, witnesses later reported seeing the children getting into a green vehicle with an unidentified man near their neighborhood. The children never arrived home, and they have never been seen or heard from again.
Family Situation
At the time of the disappearance:
-
The children's parents were separated but not divorced.
-
Michael and Pamela primarily lived with their maternal grandmother, who had raised them for most of their lives.
-
The children still had regular visits with both parents.
They visited:
-
Their mother and her boyfriend
-
Their father and his girlfriend
Investigators stated the children appeared well cared for and loved, and they found no evidence of abuse or neglect within the family.
Because of the family dynamics, police initially considered whether a relative or family acquaintance might have been involved. However, extensive background checks and interviews with family members did not produce any suspects.
Authorities eventually believed the children may have known the person who picked them up, because they had been taught not to enter vehicles with strangers.
The Mysterious Phone Call
In May 1985, about four months after the siblings disappeared, Houston police received a strange phone call.
An unidentified man told investigators that Michael and Pamela had not been kidnapped and were instead living with their paternal grandmother on 75th Street in Los Angeles, California.
The Mayfield family did have relatives in Los Angeles, so police investigated the tip.
However:
-
None of the relatives had the children.
-
None knew where the children were.
Investigators reported the caller sounded like an elderly Black man, but he was never identified and the call was never traced.
Investigation
Despite witness statements about the green vehicle, investigators were never able to identify the car or the man driving it.
No confirmed sightings of Michael or Pamela have ever been reported since that day.
The case received attention in the mid-1980s and the children's photographs were circulated through missing child awareness campaigns, including being featured on milk cartons, which was a common method used at the time to spread awareness.
Today, the disappearance of Michael Ray Mayfield and Pamela Denise Mayfield remains unsolved.
