Robert James Bowling was a three-month-old infant when he vanished under mysterious circumstances in the summer of 1985. No photographs of Robert are known to exist, and investigators have only been able to create age-progression images showing what he might have looked like as he grew older.

The Trip That Led to His Disappearance

On August 11, 1985, Robert was last seen in Parker, Colorado with his mother, Laura Bowling. Traveling with them were Robert’s 18-month-old sister, Ashley Anne Bowling, and Laura’s boyfriend, John David Hinton.

At some point shortly after leaving Colorado, the group traveled south and eventually resurfaced in Louisiana. By the time they appeared there, Robert was no longer with them.

What happened during the trip remains unclear, and the accounts given later by the adults involved conflicted significantly.

Conflicting Stories About Robert’s Fate

After returning to Colorado, Laura Bowling and John David Hinton both told authorities that Robert had died while they were traveling. However, their explanations for the infant’s death did not match.

According to Hinton, Robert died from pneumonia during the trip.

Laura Bowling, however, gave a different account. She claimed that Hinton had shaken the baby to death.

In another statement attributed to Laura, she allegedly said that after Robert died, his body was placed in a plastic bag and thrown into a trash bin somewhere in Louisiana. No remains were ever located to support that claim.

Because Robert’s body was never found and there was no physical evidence confirming either version of events, investigators were unable to determine exactly what happened to him.

What Happened to His Sister

Robert’s sister, Ashley Anne Bowling, also disappeared during the trip.

Laura later told authorities she had given Ashley to a couple in Louisiana to raise. She claimed the couple paid her $10,000, though the couple later denied that any money had been exchanged.

For years, Ashley’s whereabouts remained unknown.

In 1996, more than a decade after the children vanished, Ashley was finally located alive. She had been living with the Louisiana family who had raised her since infancy. She was reunited with her biological father after being found.

Ashley’s discovery confirmed that at least part of Laura’s story about giving her daughter to another family was true.

Why Robert’s Case Remains Unsolved

Unlike his sister, Robert James Bowling has never been located, and investigators have never found physical evidence proving that he died during the trip.

Key obstacles in the case include:

  • No photographs of Robert exist.

  • His body has never been recovered.

  • Witness statements from the adults involved conflicted.

  • The events occurred across multiple states, complicating the investigation.

Because of these factors, Robert remains officially listed as Endangered Missing, and his case is still open with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Current Status

If Robert is still alive today, he would be about 40 years old. Age-progression images have been created to show what he might look like as an adult, though they are speculative due to the absence of real childhood photographs.

Investigators continue to consider the possibility that Robert died during the trip, but without physical evidence, the exact circumstances of his disappearance remain unknown.
